Saving Money Buying Eyeglasses

Saving $ on Glasses

Thrifty Thinking

Saving $ on Glasses I have been wearing glasses for over twenty years (I can’t believe it’s true, but I started wearing prescription glasses when I was a teenager).  I wear glasses most of the time.  I rotate my glasses each week with my contacts, but the lazy efficient side of me prefers wearing glasses.  About once a month I wake up in the morning, having worn my glasses through the night.  Oops!

As a mom I feel like my eye protectors eyeglasses saved my eyes a few times while holding thrashing babies, catching balls aimed at my head, and even (true story) narrowly avoiding being accidentally skewered like a shrimp by my rambunctious son flailing about with a big stick. I was thankful I was wearing my eye protectors…er, glasses.

Anyway, is your insurance covering less every year like mine for the same policy?  Have they, like mine, dropped vision care altogether?  Do you need new glasses?  It wasn’t until a couple of months ago that I even entertained the idea of shopping for glasses online.  I was amazed that shopping on-line for cheap eyeglasses could be so easy, and economical.

I still buy most things in a store because I don’t want to pay for shipping, but I learned of a company you may want to check out that pays for shipping both ways: GlassesUSA.  Prescription glasses start at $38!!  They even price match 110% if you find the same pair elsewhere for less.  GlassesUSA has a generous refer-a-friend program and a 100% satisfaction guaranteed policy!  It’s worth checking out!

I found a Consumer Reports article from December 2010 regarding the cost of eyeglasses. I was surprised to learn that the median price at independent retailers was $211 and Costco was $157.  Two years later GlassesUSA can beat that by a long shot.

They have a fun feature for “trying” on glasses. Just import a picture of yourself or use your webcam, and you can virtually try on glasses.  Amazing!  I included their mirror below if you want to experiment.  It’s user friendly; even I got it to work without assistance!  You can manipulate the size of your glasses and/or your own picture to make the glasses fit.

The generous people at GlassesUSA.com. have offered Practical Stewardship readers two discounts.

  1. Use the code FS15, and get 15% off and free shipping on any order over $50.
  2. Use the code Blog10, and save 10% off their already low prices on when you order prescription glasses.
If you haven’t considered buying glasses online, I recommend it, especially if you are looking for frugal alternatives to crazy eyeglass prices. How do you save money regarding your medical insurance budget?

  1. I only buy my glasses at my local optician’s office. It’s expensive, especially since they only carry brand name frames like Gucci. Still, I don’t shop at too many locally owned stores and so I’ve made a conscious decision to pay the premium prices to help keep a local business in business.

  2. Thanks. I’ve always wondered about buying glasses on line. Good to hear positive feedback and recommendations.

  3. I buy from Zenni optical and have been very happy with the quality and service. If you sign up for their email list they often have sales or BOGO sales.

  4. I mean all the measurements the opticion takes to fit me for glasses so that the progressive lenses sit correctly in front of my eyes.

  5. My concern with online glasses is getting the measurements right. How do you make sure that the measurements are taken and given correctly? I wear progressives and even with insurance the price of glasses is ridiculus so I put off getting them. I’d love to be confident that the online companies would fill my prescription correctly.

    1. Hi Susan, Do you mean the measurements of your physical face or of your eyeglass prescription? Thanks for visiting!

  6. Thanks for the post! I’ve always wondered what an online company would be like and your review helps. I wondered what the quality of the lenses is like – if they scratch easily? I usually get non-glare, polycarbonate, etc… Thanks for the info! Blessings!

  7. I have bought sooo many pairs of glasses online! It really is so much more affordable. I’ve bought most of mine from eyebuydirect.com, but I’ll have to check out the site you mentioned. Thanks for sharing!

  8. This is pretty slick, I will have to keep this in mind the next time we need glasses. Thank you again for sharing what you know with others. Love you!
