On Friday, my buddy Garrett came over to work out. I had planned on a metcon workout, but was battling a head cold and was having breathing issues. We elected to do some strength work that wouldn’t require such frenetic breathing.
Workout:
Five rounds:
155# bench press – 5 reps
25# weighted pull-ups – 5 reps
There is benefit to not always working yourself to failure during your workouts, and that’s what we did. It was a good workout, but not absolutely exhaustive. The bench felt fine; I had not benched in about six months, since I’ve been mainly working out solo, and I won’t bench or back squat without a spotter.
The pull-ups felt better this time than they did two weeks prior. I attribute some of that to a different lift beforehand (i.e., bench rather than thrusters and swings) but also to my increased pull-up work. I’ve been trying to jump on the pull-up bar and rip off 8 reps whenever I think about it or pull into the garage. It’s a good number that I can do anytime, wearing jeans, suit, coat, whatever. And every little bit makes a difference. 8 reps, then go inside. Nothing too crazy.
