Re-purposed Towel & T-shirt Collar to Bib Tutorial

It’s DIY time again, where every week I try to post something you can do yourself rather than buy, which is a money saver, and can be VERY REWARDING.  Some of these posts are crafts, sewing projects, homemade cleaners, homemade health aids, tutorials, and the like.

Upcycled and Repurposed Towel to Bib Tutorial

Here is my tester, Joshua, trying out a bib for his friend, Jayne.   Jayne’s sister came to help me make a few of these bibs.

The Materials:

  • a hand towel, new or old
  • the ribbing (the stretchy part that goes over your head) from a collar of an old shirt or sweatshirt, at least small adult size
  • sewing machine
  • matching thread

The Directions:

In the middle of a short side, measure about 5'' in from the edge, and draw a dot (I'm actually measuring 3" in this picture, but you get the idea.).
Make that dot the center of your circle, and draw a circle that is 4 1/2'' in diameter. You can set a compass to 2 1/4'' and draw the circle. We just eyeballed it here.

Cut out your collar from the shirt so you can use the ribbing.
You can see this shirt has been sewed around two different place.
Cut around the collar on that dotted line furthest away from the collar's edge. (This is a different collar; we did several.)
Match up the right sides together and pin down all the way around. This collar happens to fit perfectly.
(This collar is too big. If this happens, sew it where the bulk meets and cut off that extra portion. To secure, zigzag stitch it together where they meet.)
...pinning the collar down.
On the back side, sew all the way around the collar edge together with the edge of the towel. Take your time. This will require a lot of shifting. You want to make sure you catch and sew both sides together. We had to redo this a few times.
You can barely see that the circle I just sewed isn't totally straight, but it will still work. Babies aren't too particular.
Zigzag stitch all the way around (I went twice around to secure it since it will get a lot of wear and tear).
Turn it right side up, and you are finished!
