I finally started using the chia seeds I bought a month ago. I don’t know what was keeping me from throwing them in a creation, but I finally just did it. Glad I did. Do you know what they look like?
They are pretty small. They kind of look like tiny rocks. And yes, they are related to the chia pets that you have seen grow out of interestingly shaped terra cotta pots like presidents’ heads, cartoon characters, and pets (although the company has not sought FDA approval to market the Chia Pets, itself, as food).
This super food is packed with powerful antioxidants and omega 3s. Chia seeds are so good for you as they reduce blood pressure, and certain cancers. They are high in calcium and fiber, too.
Double Berry Chia Seed Smoothie
Ingredients
- 1 cup blueberries
- 1 cup strawberries
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 cup ice if the berries aren't frozen
- 2 T chia seeds
Instructions
-
Blend all ingredients until smooth.
-
Serve immediately.
The Verdict:
The chia seeds don’t have a strong flavor. They are like flax seeds in that you can add them, and your smoothie flavor won’t be drastically affected at all. Love it!!

Just had a conversation about chia seed while shopping at Whole Foods. Was thinking about substituting vanilla seeds with chia seed but happy to learn that chia seeds have no flavor. Glad to learn about the health benefits. Will definitely try out the smoothie and incorporate chia seed in other dishes I develop.
