DIY No-Sew Fleece Blanket
IT’S DIY TIME , WHERE I POST SOMETHING YOU CAN DO YOURSELF RATHER THAN BUY, MAKING IT A MONEY SAVER. PLUS, IT’S SO OFTEN SO REWARDING. YOU WILL FIND CRAFTS, SEWING PROJECTS, HOMEMADE CLEANERS, HOMEMADE HEALTH AIDS, TUTORIALS, AND THE LIKE.
A few Christmases ago the kids’ Aunt Jamie made fleece blankets for each of them. They love them, and they use them as “sleeping bags”. They keep one side open and slip into their inviting blankets and get all cozy-wozy and comfy-wumfy as I oftentimes say.
Making a no-sew fleece blanket is a great first “sewing” project for kids. For the last year when our girls’ friends have had birthdays, they inevitably put together a fleece blanket for them. We have to find something new for this next year! Here is one the Abbie made for the family for Christmas last year.
HINT: The girls learned from their cousin when putting a no-sew fleece blanket together, tie the first knot loosely and then the second knot tightly. This will help evenly distribute the tension on the blanket.
You can make the blankets as big or as small as you’d like. We typically buy 2 complimentary patterns of fabric per blanket, each one measuring 1 1/2 yards long.
The Directions:
- Choose two complimentary fleece fabrics, you pick the size.
- Place one piece of fabric on top of the other, making sure the the right sides are out. Line up, and trim so the two pieces are the exact same size.
- Keeping the two fabric pieces together, cut out a 5-inch square from each of the four corners (my Abbie-girl likes to keep these 5 inch squares to make other tiny fleece quilts).
- Again keeping the two fabric pieces together, cut fringe along all sides of the blanket. The fringe should each be about 5 inches in length, and the width should be a little thicker than your thumb. Don’t worry if this isn’t exact. These blankets are very forgiving, and we all like forgiving blankets:).
- Starting at one side of the blanket, on one set of fringe tie a loose knot, and then tie a firm knot as you go around. Leave one short side open if you want a “sleeping bag blanket”.
We hope you enjoy!
And the gift “wrapped” with extra fleece fabric.
Here is maybe the easiest fleece gift to make and gift, the no-sew fleece scarf. Sometimes if there is extra fabric, we’ll add a scarf to the gift set.
For another forgiving blanket, try a rag quilt. This blanket, thankfully, is also quite forgiving.
