The Truth About Getting Out of Debt
Okay, so the last post I wrote about debt was a big fat satire. When some of my kids heard me reading some of the points, they thought I went off the deep end. Ha! Often truth is revealed to us more clearly if we consider the opposites.
IIf you struggle with debt, getting out of debt really comes down to one thing. Just one! If you permanently change one thing, it will change your life FOR. EV. ER. The truth about getting out of debt is that you have to change your mindset. You have to change the way you view money. You have to discern want from need. You’ll have to deny yourself at times. When you change your mindset, the way you spend money will change.
Your friends might not tell you like it is because it’s uncomfortable and will downright hurt. But if you don’t change your mindset, you’ll will be right back where you worked so hard to avoid. You will be swirling around in a vicious circle. And maybe those friends aren’t so great anyway.
Often times there’s a denial of truth. Or there is an aversion to truth. Or there is a desire to ignore truth. But if we are going to tackle the ugly monster of debt, we have to strike it head on. Stare it straight in the eyes and tackle it. And when you start tackling it, it’s addicting!
Being in debt is a crushing feeling. It’s hard to breathe. It’s hard gain control. It’s hard to feel good about yourself. It resides in the back of your mind like a leech, looking for someone to devour.
People look to justify bad behaviors. “I deserve this treat.” “I am retirement age; I’m not supposed to work anymore”. “I already worked hard.” Well, sometimes you have to work harder. A lot harder. Retirement is not in the Bible. I am not saying that no one should ever retire. What I’m saying is that sometimes work looks different at different stages of life.
You’ll have to make choices to deny yourself if you want to get out of debt. Think delayed gratification. That’s quite difficult in our microwave and iPhone society.
If you find yourself in a cycle of debt, don’t turn to some alternative reality and deny the truth that you are in debt. Don’t deny that you are chained to somebody or something else. Pray that God break the chains and change your mindset.
If you find yourself shackled by debt and actually realize it, this is the GREAT news. When when realize and acknowledge your problem, you can do something about it. You are the one who holds the key. It might take some time; it might take a lot of time. Maybe months and maybe years, but you can do it. You can get out of debt.
How do you do get out of debt? Change your mindset. You get into debt dollar by dollar. You have to realize the value of one dollar. One dollar really does matter. You get out of debt one dollar at a time.
