I’m a sucker for my slow cookers. And yes, I have multiples:). I still haven’t given in to the ways of the pressure cooker. After cooking rice repeatedly in the crock-pot, I wanted to try quinoa in the slow cooker as well. So for about the last decade I’ve been cooking quinoa in the slow cooker. Cooking quinoa in the crock-pot is just as easy as cooking rice. I love how I can prep it, fire up the slow cooker and leave it for a couple of hours all to come back to quinoa that’s ready for us to flavor as fancied.
*A word of warning: I’ve never had problems cooking quinoa in the crock-pot. Toward the end of cooking you will want to watch it carefully the first few times before making this for a crowd so you know you can get your desired consistency. Without opening the slow cooker, you can gently shake the lid which moves the condensation so you can peer into the crock. The quinoa is ready when all of the liquid is absorbed and it appears fluffy. You may want to add a little more water or broth at the end to get the desired moisture. And you may want to turn the crock to warm so the quinoa doesn’t get mushy (by the way, if the quinoa ever gets too mushy, you can throw it in soup). I use a 2 quart slow cooker. A three or four quart slow cooker would also work.
As you can see above, when you first put the quinoa in the crock, it may float.
So, can you cook quinoa in a slow cooker? Absolutely, yes! And it feels so much lower maintenance to me than cooking it on the stovetop. If I need quinoa quickly, I’ll cook it on the stovetop. I just usually don’t need to. Then I feel much more flexible. I don’t have to be married to a boiling pot.
