Why You Need to Read the Slight Edge
The difference between complete failure and tremendous success is often slight. This message comes across powerfully in the book The Slight Edge: Turning Simple Disciplines into Massive Success and Happiness.
In The Slight Edge (one of the best books I’ve ever enjoyed), author Jeff Olson makes this case repeatedly, and he does it without becoming redundant. I’ve never read a book with such a simple thesis, stated so clearly, and repeated so many times without its becoming boring or annoying. Rather, he revisits the same concept from every conceivable angle in order to drive home a very simple point: small, simple decisions, compounded over time, will reap tremendous rewards.
And in every case these Slight Edge strategies that make a huge difference are easy to do, and they’re easy not to do. Hence the “slight” part of The Slight Edge.
That’s it. But if you just take my word for it, you’re doing yourself a huge disservice. Olson’s repeated examples and illustrations make the point so convincingly that it will forever change the way you think about desserts and dollars.
Want a taste of The Slight Edge? Okay. Consider this. What would your life look like today if you…
- would have exercised at least 10 minutes per day since high school?
- had saved an extra $10 per week since your first job?
- had read 10 pages of a good, personally-enriching book 5 days per week the last five years?
Are any of these things hard to do? No! They’re easy to do….and, as Olson says, they’re easy not to do.
What’s more, the principles are universal. They apply to the arenas of health, fitness, business, finance and even faith (though the book is by no means a suitable substitute for Scripture).
If you’re interested in putting a few helpful strategies in your personal development tool bag, or if you know you need to grow in your own thinking, then I cannot recommend The Slight Edge highly enough.
